Percent of my Heart
My phone was at 87 percent.
The day seemed heaven sent.
Even though my friend was headed back to his home state.
I still think the day went great.
I’m at 48 percent still.
As my phone rests on that window sill.
I wonder if he thinks of me as a dusty file.
I haven’t charged my phone in a while.
When I saw my phone at 43.
It was like a splash of water hit me.
Then I sunk back inward.
I don’t know where I left that cord.
When your phone dies, so do you.
Or sometimes before, that is true.
So take a moment to pray a bit.
Don’t look down, or you’ll get hit.
At 4:37 pm that afternoon.
I wonder if he saw the moon.
Or if he was simply looking down...
At my text with a frown.
I never told his family that we were reckless.
It would be too much to confess.
So I simply sent out heart after heart.
To family and friends who were falling apart.
My phone was at 22 percent when I sent my message.
I should have been more sage.
They say his phone was lost that day.
On that fateful Sunday.
When your phone dies, nothing happens.
Except that you can’t pretend…
I deleted our last texts after a week.
I know it sounds bleak…
But I hope his phone is broken or in a lake.
There’s just too much at stake.
When your phone gets eaten by the ground.
That’s when you know the truth will never be found.
