Disqualifying poems deemed to be AI

Blog Posted:6/21/2025 10:04:00 PM

In contests, now we check poems for AI. The dilemma is that results vary. On one hand, there's no question ~ AI poems must be rejected but on the other hand, what if a poem is human written but considered by the engine as AI? That is unfair too.

I now employ three engines ~ rewritify.ai, Quillbot and Scribbr. Rewritify in fact relies on multiple engines through a link or arrangement they claim to have.

Anyway, if two out of these three engines says the poem is AI, then I'll not be considering the poem. Apologies to those who have genuinely crafted the poem but have been deemed guilty by the engines. Unfortunately, there seems to be no other way to resolve this situation as of now.

if anyone has ideas on this, I'm open to considering all options.

Yes, let us all keep creating poems with God’s help, as the song of our heart.
Date: 6/23/2025 11:21:00 AM
If one authentically creates a piece for a contest, submit it. If AI wins so what? Your submission reveals your heart, your experience, your character, your spirit. That is the “win” you can be proud of. Is AI going away? Not unless management wants it to. $.02.

But it does not reveal a persons heart, experiences, character, or spirit, it is written by a soulless robot. This a win a person should be ashamed of "cause they did not write it.

This is a difficult subject. I never write using AI. I hope these things AI trackers are accurate because I would hate to see anyone hurt by it. I love this sight for its contests which have helped me to try different forms, ideas, etc.. and running a contest helps you to learn how truly hard it is to judge. It is good for us. I don’t like to see the contest sponsors being judged for not catching an AI poem. Still sorting out my thoughts on all this! It is good to discuss.

Gosh. I couldn't even figure that out. People are smart enough to figure out how to USE AI and not write their own words? So ironic.

Andrea, just use Quillbot or Scribbr, enter the limerick numerous times till you reach the word requirement, usually 80 words then click check poem, and if AI if will tell you.

AI and Plagerism are like viruses infecting PS, so much AI junk, and stolen poems. It is creating a place that we many never be able to feel good about again. I cannot control it but I can control my own contest.

Jan I am judging my contest and can't get it to check for limericks using what Seeker showed us. what was that one you mentioned one time?

Kim even the humble limerick can be written using chat gp in fact i found 3 'tools' which will write limericks hence the reason i will no longer sponsor contests. I think if a sponsor checks using the 3 AI sites recommended by admin and the poems all show 100% AI then the sponsor is justified in giving them and n/a.

From the sponsor’s point of view, it trebles the work actually. We each must frame our own yardstick for this. True, a human written poem may be classified as AI by an engine (that’s why I’m using three engines) but that is unfortunate then. We can appreciate AI poems but I’d not like to place a computer in my contests ~ let that recognition go to a human, with a glowing heart.

Hi Seeker, I feel that one should apply one's own judgement. Much like hiring a private detective to get evidence on a cheating partner. You already know the answer, but are you hoping for a different outcome?.The question you should ask yourself is what would your reaction be if a trusted friend turns out to be a cheat? Do we want to know or are we only reserving the condemnation for the luckess few? Maybe turning it into an opportunity to mentor instead of outright condemnation would foster a community spirit we desire. I wish that instead of "winning" being the goal; the love of poetry could be fostered. It is so much more than just dead words on a page - AI can't be a foster friend ...

To me it does not matter who uses AI, if found out the poem will be rejected. All contest entries are the same even if recognisable patterns reveal to us who the poet probably is. Earlier I never used to check but now I’m doing so. The only problem is that we must concede benefit of doubt, in that, the poem may be human written but the engines may say it is AI. However, the poem would be disqualified nevertheless, bad luck is all I can say … after all, we have to adopt a system aimed at fair play, even if it is flawed.

This feels like the right track, Suzette. Calling someone in and letting them know how they're coming across seems a far better way to build community and spend time. If I ever suspected a trusted friend, I would simply talk to them. This is a good take.
Date: 6/22/2025 10:59:00 AM
My advice is going to be the least popular but I'd like to think the sanest: Don't worry, be happy. Wait! Where have I heard that before? Anyhoo, the subject has been endlessly debated with no clear resolutions available at present. If you (accidentally) place an AI poem in your contest it will not be an omen that the end of the world is nigh. Bottom line: Just worry about your own integrity and quit fussing over what others do. It just ain't worth it

I agree Tom: Don't worry, be happy. For the time we have left. Peeps upset with AI in poetry, just wait until it starts in with the power grid, food supply, money markets, etc. Just like many times before, we just couldn't help ourselves. Another example of the T in TULIP.

I have not used AI checkers yet but there could always be a first time!!
Date: 6/22/2025 9:32:00 AM
Perhaps admin could introduce another tick box when we post a poem on soup (instead of the one that says "I have read the terms and conditions") to say "this poem has been written by the poet and is not generated by AI or plagiarised from another poet"!!!

It is so difficult on judges now. I will resort to something like what you are doing if a poem gives me that AI vibe. One poem in my current contest is like that, so I guess I will have to use different AI checkers on it!

U.S., I agree with your stance on this. It is shame that we have to check every poem entry for AI now. There is also plagiarism as well going on and some are entering contest with plagiarized poems. I am on the fence regarding continuing to sponsor contests. The admins have been quiet as well with all of this going on.

Heya Seeker another good idea might be, if you’re deeming a poem as AI, to let that person know through soup mail, otherwise aspersions may be cast on poems that don’t make the winners list in your contest, so at least if a human poem is not placed, it can still hold its head up as a genuine effort, cheers David

To build on your idea a little bit: there are myriad ways to convey that a piece has an inauthentic feel without having to make an accusation, and while still being honest/helpful to the recipient. Even something like, "You may have over tweaked this. It makes me feel like I'm reading a machine." Or just chuck it in the N/A pile and keep it moving xD

David, we have been told by admin to not accuse poets of AI but to report to admin

Unfortunately many poets write in a very robotic formulaic way. Good luck trying to decode what is genuine and what is AI generated.

With all due respect, I have to ask: Is the antidote to AI simply reading more broadly? As in, well beyond PS. But if you're limiting yourself to just this space, then at least read more widely than the same inner circle of twenty-ish poets, perhaps? Because first of all, you will always find what you're looking for. And second (one person's opinion), I think you should trust your gut/experience. And if you ever realize you’ve placed a suspected AI, take it as a quiet, personal nudge that maybe it’s time to expand your palette? I don't want any smoke over this comment, but all of this just feels like it's focusing on the wrong thing.

Hey Jaymee so good to see you speaking up on a blog. I've been suggesting for some time that there are bigger problems to worry about in the world than who is or who is not using AI on an amateur poetry site. And peer sponsored contests? Sigh. Don't even get me started. Some of the sponsors can barely spell and they're worried about AI? Personally I don't care for it, but I sure won't lose any sleep over it. AI is everywhere right now and it's not going away. My solution? Same as I've harped over the years, ie, eliminate peer sponsored contests altogether and just write

Isn't one's depth and breadth of experience reading poetry a better measure of whether something is machine written? It all seems too ironic to be studying AI patterns instead of language, and then relying on the same bots to detect one another. It feels like crazy making to me. I respect your writing and general philosophies, but we may have to high-five and disagree on this one. No hard feelings.
